Fery advances after Fearnley retires
Fearnley was trailing 5-1 when he retired. Fery broke him in only Fearnley’s second service game, and the British No 1 then won the next two games to look set for a comprehensive first-set victory.
Fearnley then stopped the contest, shook the umpire’s hand and retired with an unspecified injury, allowing Fery to progress.
Fery will face the winner of the match between sixth seed Francis Tiafoe and Lorenzo Musetti in the second round. Fery lost to Musetti in straight sets at the US Open.

Dart, who also came through two qualifying rounds, will next face Uzbekistan’s Polina Kudermetova or Indonesia’s Janice Tjen in the last 16. She won a see-saw contest against world number 123 Prozorova, with both players struggling to hold serve.
The British number five broke three times in the decider to open up a 5-2 lead, then served out to seal victory in two hours and 15 minutes.
