Canada’s Leylah Fernandez moved closer to her second WTA title of the season, beating Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals on Friday at the Ningbo Open.
The win gave Fernandez a 3-3 career record against Alexandrova. It was her second victory over the Russian in as many weeks.
The 24-year-old from Laval, Que., dropped the first set but then dominated. She scored four breaks while surrendering none over the next two sets.
Fernandez has won 12 of her last 15 matches. Last month in Singapore, she claimed her sixth career WTA title.
Fernandez will face Marie Bouzkova in the semifinals of the WTA 500 hardcourt tournament. Bouzkova won their only other meeting, a first-round match at the 2019 Rogers Cup (now the National Bank Open) in Toronto.
